So can anyone explain to me why Philip just gave up on trying to get custody of Tyler? Especially after he was so determined to be a father to Claire?
I just started watching the show again this past December. It seems out of character for him.

Excellent question - and I couldn't agree more your own observations. It was totally out of character.
That entire story started around July 4, when Philip got that first call. The show spent 4 months building it up, with Philip (and Belle) looking for Tyler, with them finding Lauren, her dying, them not knowing where the baby was. All this time, Steve and Kayla were looking after the infant, bonding with him . . . It had the makings of a solid story - with some relevant legal issues playing into it (i.e., Philip had signed away his rights to Tyler when Lauren was carrying the child.)
Then, suddenly, one two three - Philip finds his son, changes his mind, decides two strangers he's never seen before are better suited to raise his son. In a matter of two or three scenes, Philip did a complete, inexplicable about face. Here he was, a Kiriakis, the son of a man who places so much value in family - - a man himself who went around the world to find the little girl he thought, and still felt, was his own, yet suddenly loses all interest in his own flesh and blood? Made no sense at all. That Victor and Kate didn't press their son to win custody of his son also made no sense.
The writers decided, for some reason, to drop the story, after developing it all those months, after getting viewers involved - with no payoff for anyone, no satisfactory conclusion. It's a combination of sloppy writing, lack of planning, the inability to see anything through. Jay was great in those scenes where Philip gave up his son, but the material he was given to work with left a great deal go be desired. It simply wasn't Philip - nor was the apparent lack of reaction from his father and/or mother 'Victor' or 'Kate.' None of it was in keeping with any character involved. In the end, the Tyler story was a total letdown - all that buildup, to absolutely nothing. The writers robbed us, and Jay, of a great story.
The sad thing is, it wasn't the first time since Jay's return that Days dropped the ball so to speak with his story. Jay was promised a Post Traumatic Stress Disorder story - that was the deciding factor, for him, in his return. The show started to develop it, but dropped it just as quickly - without even identifying it as the cause of Philip's edgy, explosive anger. He was erupting with no provocation, then suddenly, his entire demeanor changed - he was calm, even tempered, with no mood swings. Like the Tyler story, Jay did exceptional work - but the writing changed course without sense, without reason, without working the story to a realistic conclusion and satisfying payoff.

Excellent post, Steve. I couldn't agree more. I think Philip fans deserve a payoff and hopefully the writers would eventually bring up the issue with Tyler and maybe Philip would change his mind someday, before Jay decides to leave the show.

Well, if they do decide to bring Tyler back to the show, the boy they cast is going to have to be really cute... I hope they do pick up that storyline again in the future. It would be interesting to see more of that side of Philip, as a father.

I agree, he was a great father for Claire so I wouldn't expect anything else from him.
