'Give JKJ his OWN Storyline' Campaign
It's three-plus months into Jay's return to Days of our Lives. In those three months, his Philip has chased Shawn, Belle and Claire, and . . . well, that pretty much covers it. Philip - in near-constant rant mode - provides the impetus that keeps Shelle on the run. Outside of that one purpose, he truly doesn't exist on the canvas - no job, no social life, no romance.
Based on the various posts (on SoapCity, on the NBC board, on JKJ-NOW and JKJ-JP), we all want more - far more - for Jay, and for Philip. I've noticed, in the past few weeks, how many people have enjoyed seeing Philip far away from Shelle; they love his give and take with EJ, his banter with Kate, his fleeting moments with Lucas, Will and Sami. These enjoyable scenes notwithstanding, Philip's sole reason for being, is - still - to reclaim Claire.
ENOUGH! Jay's far too talented to be regulated to second banana status. Did Ken Corday and Hogan Sheffer hound Jay months on end, only to have him be a prop? I hope not. It's time WE all made our voices heard - GIVE JKJ HIS OWN STORYLINE.
We're launching this campaign, to make TPTB give Philip a life - a varied one, one that allows Jay to explore the character's many sides, many moods.
Below is a template campaign letter. Please use it, and send to the various individuals - all, if possible - listed below (addresses and emails provided.) If you wish, copy and paste/print the letter verbatim. Or, personalize it - make it say whatever's on your mind. For snail mail correspondence, write the following on the envelope (on both sides) in a visible marker (such as red):
Give JKJ His OWN Storyline
(HINT: I've completed my letters. I didn't write the message - I typed it out, using a red font, copied it to get enough for both sides, printed it off, cut each one out, and taped them - at a diagonal - on the envelopes, one on each side. They should certainly gain attention.)
For e-mails, type that same phrase in the Subject heading.
For campaign letters being sent to individuals other than Corday or Sheffer, it might be best to somehow identify the soap. For instance, in letters to Kevin Reilly and Jeff Zucker, you could write the following:
Give Days' JKJ His OWN Storyline
(For Lynn Leahey, Janet Di Lauro, Carolyn Hinsey and Stephanie Sloane, I put the above in quotes, and added Campaign:
'Give Days' JKJ His OWN Storyline' Campaign
Then, in each letter, I added a line right after the salutation, informing Leahey, Di Lauro,Hinsey and Sloane that this campaign letter has been sent to executives at NBC/Days, and that I wanted to send a copy to them. I thought it would explain what's going on, so they'd realize what we're doing.)
Please post this message/link on any related site - get the word out! Let DOOL know we're fed up seeing Jay play a one-note character, that we're tired of Philip being off the screen for days, even weeks, at a stretch, because he's not needed to keep Shelle on the run. Corday and Sheffer should be truly thankful to have gotten this very talented actor back on their show. It's time they SHOW how much they appreciate his return - and OUR support of Days - by doing right by Jay and by Philip. Lets inundate the various people listed below, and make our collective voices heard.
Thanks for supporting Jay!
Sincerely,
Steve

Dear XXXXXXXXX:
When Days of our Lives brought the vastly talented Jay Kenneth Johnson back to Salem, many of his supporters (who'd left Days when he did, in 2002) returned, for JAY; others, who'd stayed with the show, were delighted to hear he was reprising the role of Philip Kiriakis. The initial excitement soon turned to frustration: while Jay's delivered knockout performances, the story has failed Jay, Philip and the audience. Since Jay's debut in January, his Philip has been utilized for one purpose: to 'prop' Shelle as catalyst for their story. When Philip's not keeping Shelle on the move, he's off the screen for days - even weeks - at a stretch. Outside of this relentless pursuit of Shawn/Belle/Claire, Philip doesn't exist, on the canvas; he doesn't have a job, a social life, a love interest. Jay's a genuine actor, one fully capable of adding shading and layers to his characterization. As a JKJ supporter, I want to see Jay front and center in his OWN story, one that shows a well-fleshed out, multi-dimensional, multi-faceted Philip - one that delves into his professional and personal lives, that explores a romance. I want stories that revolve around HIM, not stories where he merely functions as a one-note (read, RANT MODE) plotline catalyst.
GIVE JAY HIS OWN STORY - it's LONG overdue. Days didn't ask this immensely talented actor back to be a one-dimensional second fiddle. MAKE PHILIP THE FOCAL POINT of his own story/stories - GIVE PHILIP A LIFE! There are MANY simultaneous directions to take Philip. For instance, delve into Post-Traumatic Stress - explain why Philip's filled with anger, why he's manhandling women, why he's explosive, why he's experiencing volatile mood shifts. Have Philip launch plans to overtake Titan - and oust his never-to-be-pleased father, by beating Victor as his own ruthless game. Have Philip suddenly realize, he has ANOTHER child out there - and do all that's possible to find him or her. Also, how about - for a change - have a woman put the moves on Philip, chase HIM - a woman who sees the dark side in Philip, yet recognizes the soft . . .
GIVE JAY HIS OWN STORYLINE! GIVE PHILIP A MULTI-DIMENSIONAL LIFE outside of Shelle. I guarantee - Jay will soar in the role. USE Jay's undeniable talent, allow him to do what he's best at: make Philip a complex, multi-sided, conflicted, contradictory - i.e., very human - character. Change Philip - and watch Jay deliver! That change in character will delight Jay's many supporters. It will enrich a show that is losing viewers - - because of the storylines and writing. (Several actors have been asked to return to Days, only to have their characters function as props for others. It's a chronic problem, one that needs to be addressed.)
Sincerely,
