Dear XXXXXXXXX:
When Days of our Lives brought the vastly talented Jay Kenneth Johnson back to Salem, many of his supporters (who'd left Days when he did, in 2002) returned, for JAY; others, who'd stayed with the show, were delighted to hear he was reprising the role of Philip Kiriakis. The initial excitement soon turned to frustration: while Jay's delivered knockout performances, the story has failed Jay, Philip and the audience. Since Jay's debut in January, his Philip has been utilized for one purpose: to 'prop' Shelle as catalyst for their story. When Philip's not keeping Shelle on the move, he's off the screen for days - even weeks - at a stretch. Outside of this relentless pursuit of Shawn/Belle/Claire, Philip doesn't exist, on the canvas; he doesn't have a job, a social life, a love interest. Jay's a genuine actor, one fully capable of adding shading and layers to his characterization. As a JKJ supporter, I want to see Jay front and center in his OWN story, one that shows a well-fleshed out, multi-dimensional, multi-faceted Philip - one that delves into his professional and personal lives, that explores a romance. I want stories that revolve around HIM, not stories where he merely functions as a one-note (read, RANT MODE) plotline catalyst.
GIVE JAY HIS OWN STORY - it's LONG overdue. Days didn't ask this immensely talented actor back to be a one-dimensional second fiddle. MAKE PHILIP THE FOCAL POINT of his own story/stories - GIVE PHILIP A LIFE! There are MANY simultaneous directions to take Philip. For instance, delve into Post-Traumatic Stress - explain why Philip's filled with anger, why he's manhandling women, why he's explosive, why he's experiencing volatile mood shifts. Have Philip launch plans to overtake Titan - and oust his never-to-be-pleased father, by beating Victor as his own ruthless game. Have Philip suddenly realize, he has ANOTHER child out there - and do all that's possible to find him or her. Also, how about - for a change - have a woman put the moves on Philip, chase HIM - a woman who sees the dark side in Philip, yet recognizes the soft . . .
GIVE JAY HIS OWN STORYLINE! GIVE PHILIP A MULTI-DIMENSIONAL LIFE outside of Shelle. I guarantee - Jay will soar in the role. USE Jay's undeniable talent, allow him to do what he's best at: make Philip a complex, multi-sided, conflicted, contradictory - i.e., very human - character. Change Philip - and watch Jay deliver! That change in character will delight Jay's many supporters. It will enrich a show that is losing viewers - - because of the storylines and writing. (Several actors have been asked to return to Days, only to have their characters function as props for others. It's a chronic problem, one that needs to be addressed.)
Sincerely,
