Happy New Year!
For the first 8 or so months of his return to Days of our Lives, Jay was regulated to the background: he was off the screen days, even weeks, at a time; his Philip didn't exist beyond the chase for Claire, Belle and Shawn - we either saw him traipsing after them, or trying to locate them. No family interaction, no job, no life outside of that pursuit. All the while, the writing for Philip was all over the place - the rage we saw for months that, to me, was most definitely leading up to a Post Traumatic Stress Disorder storyline, was dropped, without explanation. Philip was suddenly calm and collected. Gears shifted - Philip pursued the son he never knew he had with a vengeance - only to give him up in a flash. Despite the uneven writing and lack of air time, Jay never failed to deliver one exceptional performance after another. Since Ed Scott took over, the writing of Philip has changed. He's now the tough, no-nonsense business scion we always knew he was, he's involved in family-related plots - and, for a change, he has the interest of two beautiful women from his past. As great as Jay was, from his earliest episodes in 2007, he just keeps getting better, adding so many layers, so much depth and complexity, to Philip - his work is Emmy caliber. No doubt about it - he deserves not only that nomination, but the statuette/award as well.
Mid January 2008 marks one full year since Jay's onscreen return as Philip Kiriakis. Over the past 12 months, many have written Jay and TPTB. We've relayed our views on Jay's talent, on Philip's lack of a storyline, on what we want to see happen to the character, to Ken Corday, Hogan Sheffer, Ed Scott, the various editors and writers of SOD and SOW, the NBC Days feedback board, etc. Our efforts were noticed by the two soap magazines, with many published e-mails, letters and blurbs devoted to our thoughts and concerns. Jay wrote a few months back, in posts on the two JKJ boards, that he felt we were being heard. The tide has certainly changed for Jay and for Philip. He's now front and center, with his talent being used as it should have been, from the onset.
I wanted to thank everyone for e-mailing and writing on Jay's behalf. It has certainly helped - each and every e-mail, letter and post on the Sony and NBC boards has made a difference, by showing those in power just what a loyal support base this incredibly talented young actor has. (Jay's gifts as an actor speak for themselves - we've let TPTB know just how recognized and appreciated that talent is, from an audience standpoint.) Though things are looking much better for Jay and his character, we can't claim a victory. We should continue to write, e-mail and post, to show our unwavering support, to express how excited we are with the direction they're taking Philip, that TPTB are finally utilizing Jay's gifts as an actor, his presence, etc.
Unlike Jay's first tenure as Philip, where he was the 'outside' corner of that triangle, he's now center of a triangle/quadrangle, with two female characters interested in him. Some want Philip to reunite with Chloe, some want him with Belle, some want him to move past both and start over with a new love interest. Whatever your hopes are, the fact remains, Jay is now THE center of interest. Write and e-mail TPTB, let them know which pairing you want - get others with similar hopes to write and e-mail (and post on the Sony and NBC boards) as well. While there are three different 'pools' of thought re Philip's love life, all have Jay's best interest at heart - all value his talent, his presence, and his potential to be a frontline performer on Days, and beyond. Showing that support, as varied in terms of storyline outcome as it may be, can only help Jay, can only strengthen his position with Days and NBC. As we write, e-mail and post, we can mention how much we want to see Jay on prime time, in guest shots, in a recurring capacity in a weekly series. He can do both Days and prime time, and NBC could make it happen (as it has for Alison Sweeney) IF we let the network know just how much support Jay has. Jay is, without question, the most talented actor on Days - he would be an incredible asset to the network, in a prime time capacity as well. Let's make the execs at the Peathingy Network aware of just how loyal and expansive a support base Jay has.
When writing TPTB, don't forget to drop Jay a letter, a card, etc. - let him know your thoughts on Philip's storyline, what you'd like to see happen. Mail volume helps - it lets the show and network know, in a measurable, tangible way, which actors are generating audience interest. Also, Jay loves to hear from people, to know what they think of the story, to know what they'd like to see.
